Pottery Barn Inspired

The Before …

Bedside table is in great condition and has a classic, understated style - it just needed a refresh that is more in keeping with the new bedroom design.

The After …

Its painted finish adds a contemporary twist, bringing a sense of sophistication and charm. The color choice was inspired by Pottery Barn’s signature style, with a hue that compliments a variety of decor themes - including casual coastal.

We’ve had these classic, traditional bedside tables for years. Originally, they were black and then creamy white (shown above). However, after two moves, some wear and tear and scuff marks, it was time to give them a ‘make over’.

Pottery Barn Inspiration

I’ve always loved the classic signature style along with the wood hue options you find at Pottery Barn - beautiful. I’m just not a fan of the Pottery Barn price tag. So after some youtube research, trial and error, I gave these little nightstands the perfect makeover for a fraction of the cost of what I’d pay for PB night stands :)

Gathering Supplies:

Step-by-Step

  • Clean
Like any paint project, cleaning is super important! I removed all hardware and drawers. Using warm soapy water (blue Dawn), I cleaned everything - scrubbing first and then wiping down.

  • Sand
Next up … to sand. Using my orbital sander with 120 grit paper, I sanded the entire piece … a good scuff is all that’s needed.

  • Clean (Again!)
Yup - another good cleaning using warm soapy water. The focus was to remove the dust from all that sanding!

  • Paint
Now that the prep work is complete, it’s time to paint! Using BEHR Ethiopia chalk paint, I painted three coats on each piece. I applied the paint using a foam roller and a good paint brush - letting the paint to dry in between coats (1-2 hours).

  • Sand
In between coats of paint and using a medium/fine sandpaper, I sanded. The sanding removes any debris or particles giving a more professional finish - highly recommend this step! After sanding, be sure to wipe down using a lint-free cloth before applying the next coat

  • Glaze
Now for the fun and what elevates this piece from good to great! Using the Rust-oleum Chalked Glaze (Antique). I applied a thin coat (using a foam brush) and wiped away using a lint-free cloth.
The glaze settles into any grooves and gives a rustic look - beautiful. The glaze is very forgiving with long drying time. You honestly cannot mess this up!

  • Top Coat - Polyurethane
Once the piece was ‘glazed’ and ‘cured’ (I let it sit overnight), I then applied 2 coats of polyurethane - be sure to follow instructions for dry time between coats. I then let them cure for 24-48 hours before I put the hardware back on. It’s been several months since completing this project and I’m super impressed with how well they are holding up!

  • And Project Complete!
And for minimal $$’s - we have like ‘new’ bedside tables that give serious Pottery Barn vibes.
